2027: Ndigbo should learn from Jesse Owens

By Osa Mbonu-Amadi

The first prominent Black Olympic athlete, Jesse Owens was advised not to respond to racial verbal attacks and insults during the 1936 Berlin Olympics. Owens, who later won four gold medals, faced racial discrimination both in Nazi Germany and back home in the segregated United States.

Owens was advised by his handlers to focus on his assured victory, avoid reacting to racial insults in and avoid controversy.

Owens’ handlers advised him to stay silent and not respond to racial provocations, focusing on his athletic performance instead. This was part of a broader strategy to ensure he wasn’t distracted from winning the trophy and also to protect him from the hostile environment, both in Nazi Germany and in the U.S., where racial segregation and discrimination were rampant.

The Muslim North, Christians, the Obidient Movement, and other Nigerians of goodwill have united for 2027. If it goes well, victory is assured. Ndigbo must borrow a leaf from Athlete Jesse Owens. A word is enough for the wise.
