Tansian University VC dies 24 hours after taking office

The newly inaugurated Vice-Chancellor of Tansian University, Umunya/Oba, Anambra State, Professor Cater Dike Umeoduagu, has died barely 24 hours after assuming office.

Umeoduagu was sworn in as Vice-Chancellor on Friday, October 2, 2026, but reportedly took ill later that night and died in the early hours of Saturday, October 3.

Sources familiar with the development said the professor suddenly became unwell around midnight and passed away at about 2am.

A professor of Microbiology, Umeoduagu was a former Deputy Vice-Chancellor of the university and also served as a member of the Anambra State House of Assembly, representing Aguata I Constituency during the 7th Assembly.

His time in the university’s administration was not without controversy, with tensions and disagreements reportedly emerging during his tenure as Deputy Vice-Chancellor.

His appointment as Acting Vice-Chancellor had also sparked controversy, after a former Vice-Chancellor reportedly described his emergence as a “palace coup.” The university subsequently issued a statement defending and affirming Umeoduagu’s appointment.

His sudden death, coming just a day after his inauguration as substantive Vice-Chancellor, has left the university community and colleagues mourning.
