Former President Muhammadu Buhari passes away in London

It is with profound sadness that the family of former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari has announced his passing. The news was first shared by his former aide, Bashir Ahmad, on social media platform X, stating:

“The family of the former president has announced the passing on of the former president, Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, this afternoon in a clinic in London.
May Allah accept him in Aljannatul Firdaus. Amin.”

Muhammadu Buhari, born on December 17, 1942, in Daura, Katsina State, was a towering figure in Nigeria’s political and military history. His career spanned several decades, marked by both military and civilian leadership roles.

Buhari first came to national prominence as a military officer, rising through the ranks to become Nigeria’s Head of State from December 31, 1983, to August 27, 1985, following a military coup. During his military regime, he was known for his strict discipline, efforts to combat indiscipline, and a controversial war against corruption and indolence, which earned him both respect and criticism.

After years away from the political spotlight, Buhari transitioned to civilian politics, contesting presidential elections multiple times before finally winning in 2015. His election marked a historic moment as he became Nigeria’s first opposition candidate to defeat an incumbent president in a democratic election. He served two terms from 2015 to 2023.

Buhari was awarded the Grand Commander of the Federal Republic (GCFR), Nigeria’s highest honor, reflecting his significant role in the nation’s history.

The former president passed away peacefully in a London clinic, where he had been receiving medical treatment. The Buhari family is expected to announce burial arrangements soon, which will be conducted in accordance with Islamic rites, honoring his faith and traditions.

May his soul rest in eternal peace.
