NCC condemns attack on copyright officers during anti-piracy raids

By Prisca Sam-Duru

Officers of the Nigerian Copyright Commission (NCC) and personnel from the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) were violently ambushed on Thursday, September 25, 2025, during an anti-piracy operation at Sabo Market, Sagamu, Ogun State.

The enforcement team was attacked shortly after successfully identifying and impounding pirated books from an unmarked shop within the market.

The management of the NCC issued a strong condemnation of the “violent and unprovoked attack” and commended the officers of both agencies for their “restraint in the face of this provocation.” The Commission affirmed the officers’ “gallantry and unwavering commitment” to the ongoing national campaign against copyright piracy.

In a statement released by the Director of Public Affairs, Ijeoma Egbunike, the NCC vowed that the perpetrators will face the full weight of the law.

“Working with relevant authorities and the market executives, the Commission will ensure that those behind this brazen attack are identified and brought to book,” the statement read.

The Commission further noted that obstructing, hindering, or assaulting a copyright officer in the lawful performance of duty is an offence under the Copyright Act, in addition to other potential charges.

The NCC emphasised that the incident would not deter its mission to combat piracy and protect the nation’s creative economy.

The Commission further highlighted that the Federal Government is currently prioritising the creative and copyright-based industries for job creation, wealth generation, and national development, making the anti-piracy efforts more critical than ever.

The NCC also stated that it remains resolute in its goal to ensure Nigerian creators enjoy the full benefits of their intellectual labour.

The agency concluded by appealing to all stakeholders, including market executives, community leaders, and industry practitioners, to collaborate with the Commission in its fight against copyright piracy, aligning with the national call for collective responsibility in building a better Nigeria.
