DSS arraigns five suspects over kidnapping of NYSC members in Imo

By Fortune Mbonu

The Department of State Services (DSS) has arraigned five suspects over the abduction of 20 prospective members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) and another passenger in Imo State.

The suspects were brought before the Imo State High Court on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, following the kidnapping incident that occurred on October 1.

The victims were reportedly travelling when they were abducted by gunmen. They regained their freedom on October 7, following efforts to secure their release.

The arraignment marks a step in the legal process to investigate the incident and establish the alleged roles of the suspects in the abduction.

The case has renewed concerns over the safety of prospective corps members and other travellers, particularly in areas affected by insecurity in the South-East.

The NYSC scheme deploys graduates across Nigeria for the mandatory one-year national service programme, making the security of participants a major concern for families and relevant authorities.

The suspects are expected to face the charges brought against them as the court proceedings continue. They remain presumed innocent unless proven guilty by a court of law.

Further details on the specific charges, the pleas entered by the defendants and the court’s subsequent decisions will depend on information released during the proceedings.
