Broda Shaggi’s second chance: The bullet that changed the course of his life

By Fortune Mbonu

For Nigerian comedian and skitmaker Broda Shaggi, what began as an ordinary day at work turned into a terrifying fight for survival, leaving him to confront the fragility of life, the uncertainty of his career and the emotional weight of being away from the entertainment industry he loves.

In March 2026, the entertainer, whose real name is Samuel Animashaun Perry, was reportedly hit by a stray bullet near Sango-Ota Bridge in Ogun State while returning from a shoot. Caught in a traffic jam, he had little warning before the sudden sound of gunfire changed everything.

“We were done shooting and were on our way when we got stuck in a holdup. Suddenly, I heard a loud bang and everywhere went silent. I could see people talking, but I couldn’t hear anything. Then I touched my hip and saw blood. That was when it dawned on me that I had been hit by a stray bullet,” he recounted.

The incident marked the beginning of a difficult journey that would test his physical strength and emotional resilience.

A painful journey to recovery

Following the shooting, Broda Shaggi underwent surgery and spent four months receiving treatment in Nigerian hospitals. However, his recovery proved more complicated than expected, as he continued to struggle with walking despite the medical attention he received.

For an entertainer whose career depends heavily on physical expression, movement and the ability to bring characters to life, the difficulty was particularly challenging. His body, which had helped him build a reputation for energetic performances and memorable comic characters, suddenly became a source of uncertainty.

Seeking further treatment, the comedian travelled to Dubai for a replacement procedure. According to his account, the intervention brought encouraging progress, allowing him to stand with support just two days later.

The improvement offered a renewed sense of hope after months of uncertainty, although standing with assistance represented only one stage in what could be a longer rehabilitation process.

The emotional cost of being away

Beyond the physical pain, Broda Shaggi’s experience exposed the emotional struggles that can accompany a sudden interruption to a successful career.

In his YouTube video titled Second Chance (The Story), the entertainer opened up about the distress he experienced while watching life in the entertainment industry continue without him.

He reportedly broke down in tears over missing his colleagues’ skits and worried that audiences might eventually forget him.

For a performer whose popularity has been built through frequent appearances, collaborations and a steady stream of comedy content, the fear of being forgotten was more than a passing concern. It reflected the pressure entertainers face to remain visible in an industry where public attention can shift rapidly.

His experience also highlights a less-discussed aspect of recovery: the challenge of reconciling the need to heal with the fear of losing professional momentum.

While the body requires time to recover from a serious injury, the entertainment industry continues to produce new content, introduce new personalities and respond to changing audience interests.

For Broda Shaggi, the question was not simply whether he would walk again, but also whether he could return to the world in which he had established himself.

A second chance at life

Despite the ordeal, gratitude has become a central part of the entertainer’s account of his survival. His willingness to share the experience offers a glimpse into the vulnerability behind the comic persona that audiences have come to recognise.

The incident also draws attention to the devastating consequences of gun violence and the danger faced by innocent people caught in situations beyond their control. A routine journey home from a work assignment became a life-threatening emergency, illustrating how quickly ordinary circumstances can turn tragic.

As Broda Shaggi looks towards new projects and a return to creative work, his journey depicts a personal effort to rebuild after an experience that could have ended his life.

The road ahead may still require patience, rehabilitation and emotional adjustment. Nevertheless, his survival has given him another opportunity to pursue the work that made him a household name.

The laughter Broda Shaggi brings to millions now sits alongside a deeply personal story of pain, fear and renewed hope. His ordeal has given a different meaning to the phrase “second chance”.
