Tension broke out at the Lagos International Trade Fair Complex along the Lagos-Badagry Expressway on Monday as traders protested the alleged expansion of Chinese merchants into retail trading.
The protesters expressed fears that the growing presence of Chinese retailers could threaten local businesses, intensify competition and eventually push Nigerian traders out of the market.
The demonstration was later suspended following interventions by the Traders Association leadership, local government officials and the police.
Speaking on Tuesday, the Secretary of the Traders Association, Juventus Okpala-Okaka, said the protesters acted despite efforts by the market leadership to address their concerns.
The dispute highlights growing tensions between foreign merchants and local traders over access to Nigeria’s lucrative retail market.
For many Nigerian traders, the concern is not simply the presence of Chinese businesses but their alleged move from wholesale trading into direct retail, potentially putting them in competition with local entrepreneurs who depend on the market for their livelihoods.
The situation has renewed calls for clearer enforcement of trading regulations and a balance between foreign investment and the protection of local businesses.
